2017 Award For Environmental Leadership

Congratulations to Lincoln Sudbury graduate Cecilia (Ceci) Barnes, this year’s recipient of Sustainable Sudbury’s third annual Award for Environmental Leadership. The award was presented by Richard Vanderslice, pictured here with Ceci at the Community Scholarship Awards ceremony on May 30th at LSRHS.

Cecilia, a 2017 graduate of Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School and a member of the LS Environmental Club, initiated efforts to reduce plastic waste in the school by helping implementation of water bottle refill stations. She also drafted legislation for the towns of Lincoln and Sudbury to ban the sale of single use plastic water bottles and thin-film plastic shopping bags in retail stores. She joined five other members of the club to present these articles at Sudbury town meeting in May 2017. Both articles passed and go into effect on July 1, 2018. Sustainable Sudbury will work with the club to educate the public and town merchants about the new bylaws.

Cecilia will attend Middlebury College’s renowned Environmental Studies program in the fall. She plans to focus on implementing educational initiatives aimed at teaching youth how their choices directly affect the natural world. Ceci joins previous recipients Katie Semple, (LSRHS class of 2016) and Grace Caltabiano (LSRHS class of 2015).
